Description: Located just north of Nashville Highway, the existing bridge carrying Ionia Road over the Thornapple River is a 3-span steel beam bridge with a length of 112 feet and is in need of repair. This project will replace the deteriorated bridge railings, perform a shallow deck repair over the entire bridge surface, sand blast and repaint the existing steel beams, install new bridge guardrail, and repair the road approaches.
Bids were opened on June 1, 2018 by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Grand River Construction was the low bidder with a bid of $369,853, approximately 17% lower than the estimate.
State grants through the state Critical Bridge Program will pay 95% of the contracted construction costs on the project. The remaining local matching costs not covered by grant funds, plus design and construction engineering, will be paid for with Eaton County Road Commission funds.
The bridge is currently closed and a detour is set up to use Nashville Hwy, M-66, and Vermontville Hwy. The bridge is scheduled to be opened on September 1 with one lane of traffic being maintained using traffic regulators.
The project is currently on schedule.
